DisplayPort to DVI / HDMI signal conversion principle
Since HDMI and DVI already existed when DisplayPort was introduced, DisplayPort source devices must interoperate with existing HDMI and DVI Sink devices. To meet this requirement, virtually all DisplayPort data source devices are ‘dual-mode’ devices that support DisplayPort (direct connection) and support DVI/HDMI through a cheap cable adapter (‘dongle’).
This will allow desktop or laptops to migrate to only one output connector type while still supporting legacy displays or digital TV connections. Adding HDMI functionality to semiconductor devices in DisplayPort data source devices has not increased system cost. Since the electrical interface is shared, there is no additional hardware cost added.
For DisplayPort dual-mode devices, you need to identify an icon in the DisplayPort interface section (as shown in Figure 1), indicating that the device supports not only DisplayPort, but also DVI 1.0 or HDMI. In this icon, the ‘++’ logo and the DisplayPort logo indicate the ability of the device to support dual-mode signals.

Figure 2. DisplayPort to DVI/HDMI Adapter
The cable adapter is set at the DisplayPort data source, as shown in Figure 2. The internal structure and working principle of the cable adapter of the DisplayPort data source (hereinafter referred to as the source adapter) are shown in Figure 3.

Figure 3. Internal structure and working principle of the source adapter
The source adapter should contain the following electrical characteristics:
1). A circuit for voltage conversion of differential signals;
2). For the buffer circuit that displays the DDC signal of the data channel;
3). Pull-up resistors for displaying data channel DDC clock and data signals;
4). Pull-up resistor for the 13-pin signal of the DisplayPort interface for cable adapter detection;
5). Pull-up resistor for 14-pin signal of DisplayPort interface for HDMI cable adapter detection (only for HDMI adapter);
6). The boost converter generates DDC_5V from the source DP_PWR 3.3V (if Vbias_RX is not 3.3V, it needs to generate the voltage required by Vbias_RX);
7). 1 DisplayPort 1.1 connector;
Note 1: The terminal bias voltage Vbias_Rx of the voltage converter is not necessarily +3.3V. If Vbias_Rx is not +3.3V, the adapter must generate the voltage required by Vbias_Rx itself.
Note 2: The 26kΩ pull-up resistor on the 14-pin of the interface is only required for adapters with HDMI signals. For DVI signal adapters, the interface 14 pins need to be left floating. A dual-mode source device that supports HDMI mode has a pull-down resistor of more than 5MΩ on the 14-pin to identify the pull-up resistor in the adapter. It should be noted that as part of the CEC protocol, the HDMI device may pull the 14-pin voltage low.
When a source adapter is detected by the dual-mode source device, the dual-mode device automatically reconfigures the pin definition of the DisplayPort interface to accommodate the DVI/HDMI signal mode. The mapping relationship between the pins is shown in Table 1.

Table 1. Mapping between DisplayPort and DVI/HDMI in dual-mode devices
For a dual mode source device, the voltage value on the monitor interface 13 pin is optional. Normally, the dual-mode source device will attempt to perform an AUX CH read first. If the read operation fails, the dual-mode source device performs a DDC read and write operation to detect if the adapter is connected.
