8K, DP 2.0, 80Gbps...

Not long ago, VESA officially announced the DisplayPort 2.0 specification, which ushered in the biggest leap so far, increasing the available bandwidth of DisplayPort 1.4 by a factor of three. One might say that the original DP 1.4 is sufficient for a 4K display, but the new bandwidth is still needed for Apple's new 6K XDR display and other 8K displays, and that's what DP 2.0 means.

What is Display Port?

DisplayPort (DP) is a digital video interface standard standardized by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) developed by the Alliance of PC and Chip Manufacturers. The interface is authentication-free and license-free. It is mainly used for connecting video sources and monitors, and also supports audio, USB and other forms of data.

In contrast, HDMI authentication and authorization are chargeable, and this is one of the reasons why DP is widely used in PC displays.

The DP 1.0 standard was released in May 2006 with a bandwidth of 10.8 Gbps. DisplayPort 1.0 has a maximum transfer speed of 8.64 Gbit/s and a length of 2 meters, which has been abandoned. After that, VESA released 1.1a, 1.2, 1.2a, 1.3, 1.4, and now DP 2.0.

What is the VESA Association doing?

The Video Electronics Standards Association ("VESA") is an international organization that develops standards for video equipment for computers and small workstations. It was founded in 1989 by NEC and eight other graphics card manufacturers.

In addition to the well-known DP protocol, it also certifies DisplayHDR.

The DisplayHDR specification for LCD screens includes four different levels of HDR, namely DisplayHDR 400, DisplayHDR 500, DisplayHDR 600, and DisplayHDR 1000. The DisplayHDR True Black specification for OLEDs and other displays includes two levels of HDR: DisplayHDR True Black 400 and DisplayHDR True Black 500. All of this needs to support the industry standard HDR10 format.

DP 2.0 brings bandwidth leap

The goal of DisplayPort 2.0 is to support 8K and above resolutions. The fastest mode in DisplayPort 2.0 will reach 80 Gbps of raw bandwidth, which is about 2.5 times that of DisplayPort 1.3/1.4. The picture below can be displayed more intuitively.

On this basis, DisplayPort 2.0 also introduces a more efficient coding scheme, so the effective bandwidth of the new standard will reach a peak of 77.4 Gbps, which is 2.98 times the effective bandwidth of the previous standard.

DisplayPort 2.0 is fast enough to support 8K displays without any compression (including chroma sampling), but it also supports 8K display in 30-bit color and HDR on.

In addition, DisplayPort 2.0 also supports 10K display uncompressed rendering in 24-bit color.

It should be noted that when using only two channels on the USB-C connector in DP Alt mode to allow simultaneous high-speed USB data and video, then DP 2.0 can enable the following configuration:

Display Port 2.0 and lightning interface

Both native DP connectors and USB Type-C connectors offer the benefits of DP 2.0. The USB Type-C connector can transmit DP audio/video signals in DisplayPort Alt mode. DP 2.0 is backward compatible with previous versions of DisplayPort and integrates all key features of DP 1.4a, including support for visual lossless display stream compression (DSC) with forward error correction (FEC), HDR metadata transfer and other advanced features.

With the USB-C connector, DP 2.0 improves video bandwidth performance and enables simultaneous high-speed USB data transfer without compromising display performance. DP 2.0 leverages the Thunderbolt 3 physical interface layer while maintaining the flexibility of the DP protocol to increase data bandwidth and facilitate convergence between industry-leading IO standards.

Jason Ziller, general manager of Intel's Customer Connections division, said: "Intel provides the Thunderbolt physical layer specification for DP 2.0, an important milestone that makes today's simplest and most versatile ports the most displayable ports."

VESA said that the first DP 2.0 products are expected to be available by the end of 2020.

Popularize 4K, prepare 8K

VESA said the industry is working hard to push video broadcasts beyond 4K/Ultra HD resolution, while 8K TVs and PC monitors are already on the market. For example, the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) has announced the 8K broadcast program for the 2020 Summer Olympics and has begun to broadcast 8K content to viewers.

At the same time, gaming platforms are challenging the limits of immersive gameplay, driving the need for higher resolution and video frame rates for PCs, laptops and mobile platforms, including smartphones and VR headsets. In order to solve these problems, further development in the display interface is required.

Turning its attention to China, at the end of June, the Central Radio and Television General Station also successfully realized the 5G remote transmission of China's first 8K ultra-high-definition content.

2019 World Mobile Congress·Shanghai (MWC2019) kicked off at the Shanghai New International Expo Center on June 26th. During the conference, the Central Radio and Television General Station set up an ultra-high-definition interactive experience zone on site and successfully realized China's first 8K. 5G remote transmission of ultra high definition TV programs.

In July, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Shaanxi Broadcasting and Television Network Media Co., Ltd., and the two sides will also cooperate in the construction of radio and television in the 5G era.
